Bargain Hunt’s Stephanie Connell says ‘it can be tough’ as she makes show admission

Bargain Hunt expert Stephanie Connell has been a mainstay on the daytime One for several years – but she admitted her journey to TV fame was “tough”.

Viewers will have seen Stephanie’s passion for antiques, her charming approach with contestants and her excitement for a big auction sale.

The expert from Surrey has worked in the art and antique sector for more than 15 years and even has her own business, Stephanie Connell Art & Antiques, specialising in 20th-century popular culture.

It’s a far cry from collecting stamps when she was 10 and would drag her parents to antique shops to look at their wares.

But the TV expert admitted “it can be tough” to build a career in the antiques trade but she would happily recommend her job to anyone interested.

When asked about advice Stephanie would give to anyone wanting to work in antiques, she said: “It can be tough but if you are truly passionate then it’s marvellous.

“You can never know everything and never stop learning. Most local libraries have good sections on antiques and art history if you are looking for somewhere to start.”

She added: “I would say go to as many auctions, fairs and exhibitions as you can. Don’t be afraid to ask to look at objects in person, particularly at an auction. Go to places, even if you can’t afford anything there – it is a good opportunity to see the very best the antiques trade has to offer.

“Ask questions – most specialists and collectors are happy to help and discuss items with you.

“If you aren’t able to get out and about or travel, look online. There are lots of great online auction catalogues and dealers’ websites for inspiration and information.”

After years in the antiques trade, Stephanie Connell got involved in Bargain Hunt through her friend and fellow auctioneer Charlie Ross.

Charlie recommended her to the Bargain Hunt producers with Stephanie then doing a screen test before waiting to hear back from the programme-makers. The pair later teamed up with for Antiques Road Trip.

The star is behind Stephanie Connell Art & Antiques, which sells design and iconic pieces of graphic design as well as historically important collector’s items.

According to the company’s official website: “As experts in 20th century popular culture the collection focuses on historic figures, cinema, travel and leisure.

“We uniquely offer a full service package including retail, private consultation valuations, acquisition and sales advice.”

Bargain Hunt airs on One on weekdays at 12.15pm
