Snow forecast: New map shows Arctic bomb unleashing subzero freeze as far south as London

Icy temperatures and unsettled conditions are forecast to continue into the run up to Christmas. Friday. December 20 shows a large area of purple covering Scotland at 12am, indicating a 6cm depth of snowfall.

England will see similar frosty conditions with a band of snowfall of up to 6cm per hour spanning across the midlands from Peterborough to Northern Wales. Snow is expected to settle in parts of southern England too, stretching to the capital.

Weather maps from WXCharts show that from Somerset to Essex, snowfall will settle on the ground as Brits could wake up to a white blanket covering the streets.

Other areas in the UK will face wetter conditions bringing in a sweep of rain across the north.

However, the southwest will remain dry throughout the early morning of December 20, yet a chilly feel will still be in the air.

The Christmassy conditions will follow through into Saturday 21 as weather maps show a swathe of purple covering Europe, heading to the UK at 6am. A wall of snowfall will continue to cover Scotland and the north of England, with showers stretching down to London.

Christmas Eve is showing signs of a white Christmas as temperature charts on December 24 turn icy blue. The UK will be plunged into a subzero freeze with the highest number reaching 3C in England, Wales and Scotland and 5C in Northern Ireland.

Yorkshire will see the lowest figure of a whopping -4C at 6am. The rest of the country will have a similar feel, as -2-0C temperatures sweep across England.

Inverness will be faced with the coldest blast in Scotland, plummeting down to -3C as the rest of the country remains below freezing.

The warmest area in England is Cornwall, hovering at around 3C on December 24. Northern Ireland is the same, reaching 5C.

The long range forecast is predicting an “unsettled regime” for next week, as blustery showers and wintry weather will hit the northwest of England. Southern areas have a greater length of drier spells, narrowly dodging the snow.

For the 24, the weather forecaster also says sleet and snow is likely, especially on higher ground – for some Brits, waking up to a white Christmas is looking promising.
