Luxembourg is the world’s richest country and offers its residents and not only a high standard of living but also free public transport.

With a GDP higher than China and the United States – GDP being the most common measure for the size of an economy – the small European nation consistently tops global wealth rankings.

Luxemburg is situated in northwestern Europe and is bordered by , and and is home to fewer than 700,000 people.

While Luxembourg’s wealth is largely driven by its robust financial services sector, the country has diversified its over recent decades.

Investment management, tourism, logistics and even steel production now play important roles in its GDP. What’s more, one of the best features of the country is its free public transport system.

Since February 2020, all buses, trains, and trams have been free for both residents and tourists.

The initiative, which aims to reduce traffic and encourage sustainability, has made getting around Luxembourg simple and cost-effective. While first-class tickets still require payment, the majority of the network is accessible at no cost. The country’s transport system is also highly connected internationally.

Luxemburg has direct links to neighboring Belgium, France, and Germany, including access to high-speed trains like Germany’s ICE and France’s TGV.

The nation’s wealth is also reflected in more than just its GDP figures. Its government allocates significant resources to public services, including housing, healthcare and education, ensuring a high quality of life for its residents.

The country rebounded strongly after the pandemic, with its economy growing over 7% in 2021, although growth slowed to 1.2% in 2024 due to global challenges like high and the war in .

But there is more to the country than just its wealth. Luxemburg is well-known for its castles and gorgeous countryside making it a place to seriously consider visiting.
