Miranda Hart, a household name renowned for her comedic talent, has been waging a personal battle with her mental and physical health behind the scenes.

As the festive season approaches, television networks are beginning to roll out popular classics, with Miranda’s celebrated show set to bring joy and laughter into homes nationwide.

Viewers can enjoy the beloved sitcom tonight on Monday, December 9, as One and iPlayer are revisiting her amusing escapades at 8pm, featuring Hart alongside , known from fame as Stevie.

With the return of her series to prime time TV, what can fans uncover about the life of this gifted actress and comic?

Dad’s harrowing experience

Hart was born in December 1972 in Torquay, Devon, but raised in Petersfield, Hampshire, receiving her education at a boarding school for girls.

Her parents are Captain David Hart Dyke and Diana Margaret Luce, with her father formerly serving as a Royal Navy officer.

Commanding HMS Coventry, the ship was destroyed by Argentine Skyhawk jets in the Falklands War of 1982, with the ship meeting its fate in the depths of the South Atlantic.

Despite the calamity that claimed 19 lives of the 300-member crew, Hart’s father miraculously survived the catastrophe.

Recounting the event to The Telegraph in 2012, he said: “It was black, with people on fire.

“I was momentarily stunned and came round seconds later, and eventually stumbled out into clear air and got out to the upper deck.”

Mental health

In addition to her father’s ordeal, the performer herself has faced periods of anxiety and depression.

Miranda Hart, the renowned stand-up comic, writer, comedian, and actress, has opened up about her struggles.

While discussing her book, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You, on , the former Call the Midwives star revealed the “treasures” that helped her during her life’s more “testing” periods.

She said: “I’m sharing the treasures that I learned in darkness.

“The things that helped me to live and feel like I am free and joyful and peaceful and physically recovered in a way that I never thought possible.”

In her book Miranda’s Daily Doses of Such Fun, she wrote: “Life during times of acute anxiety has been like wading through treacle and on bad days getting to the end of the street to post a letter was hard, such was the extreme level of fear in my body.”

The series Miranda aired for three seasons from 2009 to 2015, but its conclusion saw the leading lady hit a low point.

Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, she confessed that she had “hit rock bottom”.

“I was housebound and bedbound for years. I didn’t have a job, I didn’t have a social life. I didn’t have any responsibilities or identities.”

Health battle

Hart has battled health issues for most of her life, including fatigue, joint pain and memory difficulties.

However, she never received a definitive diagnosis, describing her condition as a “half life, a very debilitated life but with no understanding of why”.

After a slew of blood tests post ‘Miranda’, it wasn’t until some “very clever” experts diagnosed her with Lyme disease.

It’s suggested she might’ve contracted the debilitating condition during a teen stint in Virginia, known for its high rates of the infection.

Shes openly called the diagnosis a “relief” after the lengthy uncertainty.

Finding love

The comedian met her present husband Richard Fairs, 60, when he was drafted in to rid her home of mould and labelled their relationship as an “extraordinary thing”.

Their romance blossomed swiftly, culminating in a proposal at Kew Gardens and vows exchanged at St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church in Hambledon.

Chatting on The One Show, she gushed: “He’s my best friend, we have the best fun, and I’m just thrilled to be a young bride at 51.”
