A new study has found the that can help drivers cut thousands off the cost of motoring each year.
Whilst the and has remained stable and fairly low over recent months, drivers looking to get behind the wheel of a new car should still consider how many miles it can cover on a gallon of fuel.
According to the vehicle retail platform , the most economical new car is the – a stylish performance hybrid that can manage a staggering 217.3mpg.
It uses a plug-in hybrid setup that features a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a sizeable battery that allows drivers to travel up to 30 miles on pure electric.
In addition to being an economical choice, the BMW 330e will sprint from 0-62mph in under six seconds and reach a top speed of 143mph, whilst in a lavish and well-built interior.

Amazingly, cinch also highlighted that the Mercedes-Benz E300de also returns the same fuel economy figure of 217.3mpg, but using a different type of powertrain.
Whilst the E300de is another plug-in hybrid, it manages impressive fuel economy figures by using a 2.0-litre diesel engine. Even without the battery, which can be used alone to cover up to 33 miles, drivers are still able to average nearly 50mpg.
Like the rest of the Mercedes-Benz E-Clas lineup, the E300de is a particularly refined and luxurious choice, with drivers praising its smooth ride quality and simple infotainment system.

However, not all fuel-efficient cars are expensive executive hybrids, with cinch noting that the diesel-powered version of the Peugeot 208 also scores well on economy runs.
Fitted with Stellantis’ 1.5 BlueHDi, the Peugeot 208 diesel is capable of returning 71.4mpg under normal driving conditions, and will still accelerate from 0-62mph in a little over 10 seconds.
Whilst Peugeot no longer sell the 208 with a diesel engine, there are plenty of examples of the stylish yet frugal supermini being offered on the used market for affordable prices.
