The $46 Candle I Buy Once A Year That’s Worth Every Penny

Like many good things, it started as a present. That’s the only way a $46 candle would make its way into my home — me not seeing the price tag. And yet, after burning it only a time or two, I was immediately entranced. I needed to know more, gave it a Google and abruptly realized that I would be stuck buying a nearly $50 candle for the rest of my life. It’s just that good.

The candle is from Snif, a modern fragrance brand known for its genderless perfumes, room-filling candles, and Warby Parker-like try-before-you-buy system. Its body scents range from floral to fruity to spicy to smoky to truly everything else you can imagine. Yet, I am partial to the candles — particularly, Off The Grid, an enchanting but not overpowering natural-smelling candle that exudes amber, lily, musk, sandalwood and a little bit of cedar and citrus. It’s warm but still fresh, so relaxing and truly delivers a delicious smell to your whole space, not just a 12-inch diameter around the candle.

Snif

Made from a high-end, paraffin-free blend of soy and vegetable wax with a 100% cotton wick, it’s a vegan candle that can burn for over 50 hours. One candle tends to last me a whole year — I don’t use it every single day but do burn it at least weekly. It burns exquisitely, never “tunneling” or doing that thing where the wick sinks into the bottom of a wax valley and you burn yourself just trying to light it. It has a great smell radius, and when you do blow it out, it doesn’t overly smoke or make a stinky-post-candle moment.

The brand says this smell is inspired by sleepy Sunday afternoons and nights when you have turned your phone off. It truly is the scent of winding down and being out of the office, though I do often have it burning while I’m doing work. It’s noticeable but not offensive and comes in a really chic glass container that blends easily into any decor space.

Guidance from Snif suggests having the candle burn for two to three hours the first time you use it, and then keeping the burn time to a max of four hours and trimming the wick to a quarter-inch between burns. If we’re being honest, I can be a little lazy about my wick trimming, but truly that just speaks to the quality of the candle, as it’s never caused an issue for me. (But I’d still recommend you trim your wicks.)

Off The Grid candle by Snif

“There’s nothing more relaxing than unplugging, unwinding, and going “Off the Grid” when I light this candle! $44 for a candle may give some folks an initial sticker shock, but this is a classic case of “you get what you pay for,” meaning this candle is beyond worth it!High quality is an understatement when describing this. This burns evenly and clean, with no tunneling! We even have used this in air conditioned rooms without issue! Everything about this Snif candle, from the packaging, the lid, the jar, the wax, the wick ….it’s all an upgrade from the usual! The scent “Off the Grid” has an accurate description in the listing. It is definitely a rich and woody fragrance sprinkled with sensual and fresh notes… I am sensitive to sub-par candle scents, and this one does NOT irritate me at all!! When lit, this candle’s throw is impressive and fills my living room. I am sincerely happy with this! It would make a stunning gift for yourself or anyone with an appreciation for high quality home goods! I also love that I can upcycle the lid and jar when the candle is finished. I highly recommend this!” — Toni Vargo

“I was a little skeptical about this candle given the price point it’s set at but once it arrived, all my doubts were erased. This is not your usual run-of-the-mill jar-type scented candle by any stretch. It comes in a beautiful gift/presentation box and has a nice thick glass container that’s filled nearly to the top with scented wax. It’s got a complex but not an overpowering scent that, once lit, reminds me of Old Spice with its different notes of sandalwood and musk. It quickly fills a room and provides a gentle glow perfect for relaxation, aromatherapy, meditation, or anything really. The cotton wick burns evenly and consistently and is perfectly centered so you get the most out of your candle over its lifetime. The lid can double as a stand/coaster and has a separate silicone gasket that you attach so it maintains an airtight seal to preserve the scent over the long haul when not being used. It’s worth every penny of the asking price for sure.” — Bill Plunk

“I have to admit that had I not received this candle for free to review as part of the Vine Voices program I wouldn’t have bought it because there’s no way I would spend so much money on a candle. But, as I would discover after I lit it, this is no ordinary candle, so maybe it is worth the price. I really like that it’s a nontoxic, cruelty-free vegan candle. It was when the candle began to burn and give off it’s beautifully unique fragrance that I began to think perhaps there were times when one could justify what I normally would consider an outrageously high price for a candle. It was the scent that ultimately did me in. I have four favorite fragrances: sandalwood, amber, musk, and lily. It is those four fragrances that are blended together to make the unique and beautiful scent emitted by this candle. It’s definitely a luxury brand and as someone who is admittedly sometimes a reverse snob, I generally avoid such brands. That having said, the scent of this candle is so beautiful and high quality that all I can say is that if you can afford to buy it, indulge yourself and go for it!” — Barb Reinhold
