striker Michail Antonio has been involved in a road traffic, the club have confirmed.

The 34-year-old was not due to play this weekend because his side take on Wolves on Monday night in a crucial six-pointer.

Antonio trained with the rest of the squad on Friday, December 6 – just 24 hours before the accident took place – ahead of their fixture.

But their preparations have been rocked with Antonio involved in a car crash, which reportedly took place in Essex.

The east London club released a statement on Saturday to confirm that Antonio was involved in a car crash, although they did not provide an update on his condition.

A statement read: “West Ham United can confirm striker Michail Antonio has today been involved in a road traffic accident.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michail, his family and friends at this time. The club will issue an update in due course.”

On Saturday afternoon, images surfaced on social media of a that had crashed and unconfirmed reports suggested it belonged to Antonio.

It is not yet known if the car belongs to the Jamaica international, who has scored 83 goals in 322 appearances for the Irons since arriving in 2015 from Nottingham Forest.

Antonio has found the net just once in 15 appearances this season after playing a bit-part role under Lopetegui.

He previously played for Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday, Colchester, Southampton, Cheltenham and Reading in his busy career.

The incident is not the first time Antonio has been involved in an accident on the road. In 2019, he crashed his £210,000 Lamborghini into a front garden in Balham, London while dressed as a snowman on Christmas Day.

A year after that incident, the veteran forward revealed he was paying £20,000 a year to drive after struggling to find a company willing to insure him.

“It was Christmas Day. Still to this day it has hurt me. I miss that car. Basically, I was driving but it was a slippery road,” he said.

“In the car it corners nicely and holds the road, so I was going 30-35mph on a 30mph road. As it holds corners I think I don’t need to break, I’m just going to go round the corner like I do all the time.
