Christmas is a huge hit – even if something goes wrong, a study shows.
Nine out of ten Brits say it is their favourite time of the year, and they take it on the chin when things don’t go to plan.
The most common festive fails include forgetting to turn on the oven for Christmas dinner, power cuts ruining lunch – and fights over after-dinner board games.
The survey of 2,000 people comes ahead of its new animated film, That Christmas, by Love Actually creator Richard Curtis, featuring the voices of Brian Cox, Jodie Whittaker, Fiona Shaw and Bill Nighy.
Some 76% of people said they were planning to make Christmas more magical this year despite a squeeze on family budgets.
Favourite traditions include seeing the Christmas lights, Boxing Day walks and watching specials on TV – with 46 per cent saying they love a cheesy Christmas film.
And 80% of parents say they continue the family traditions of their youth. Vicar of Dibley writer Richard, 68, said: “I’ve always loved Christmas for how many things go right – and how you can be certain quite a lot will go very wrong.”
