Lando Norris will be desperate to take the crown off Max Verstappen in 2025
Max Verstappen has insisted that his fourth Formula 1 championship triumph is his best and toughest yet.
Despite the unforgettable last-lap victory against a formidable in 2021 under controversial circumstances, and shattering multiple records with 19 wins out of 22 races the following year, this season’s triumph brought a grin to his face as he reflected on his journey.
Speaking to at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Verstappen said: “In terms of overall performance last year looked better on paper. But I do think that how we had to perform this year and be on it in critical times with the result is definitely, I would say, the best one.”
With seven drivers winning multiple races throughout the season, it was who posed the significant threat to Verstappen’s title aspirations, until the defining moment at the Brazilian Grand Prix. There, from 17th on the grid, Verstappen showcased his exceptional skills, sprinting past the pack to victory before eventually sealing the title in Las Vegas.
On why he felt Norris was the one to pose the biggest challenge, the Dutch champion highlighted his talent and strong backing as key factors, telling Mirror Sport: “Lando is one of the most talented drivers on the grid from all of them. Also his car, his team was operating very well. So when you combine those things, of course, you have a very strong competitor.”
Verstappen dismissed comparisons to his past battles with and , stating: “In 2021, I think I was under a lot more stress and pressure. But different times, different cars. came off the back of a very dominant period of time. You cannot compare, it’s very different.”
After securing his place among the sport’s greats with four consecutive world titles, Verstappen is now level for fourth in the all-time rankings. With time on his side, he could surpass the records of Juan Manuel Fangio, who claimed five championships, and the seven-title holders and Michael Schumacher.
However, Verstappen remains unfazed by such prospects, saying: “I don’t really care about that. Of course, I’m very proud of my results and I’ll just always try to do the best I can.
“And when I quit, I quit – that’s it, my racing, my F1 career is over and that’s it. It’s done.
Verstappen has made it clear he plans to retire younh and has earmaked 2028 as a possible end date, coinciding with the expiration of his current contract. Off the track, his personal life is flourishing as well, as he and Kelly Piquet, daughter of ex-F1 champion Nelson Piquet, have just revealed they are expecting their first child together.
He stated: “I’m the same person here as when I am also at home. Just wanting to spend more time with family and friends, just enjoy my time off. For me, it works when I get home. You have to really not think that much about Formula 1, not read too much.
“I don’t care about people’s opinions but also I don’t follow anything. For me that works, but it might not work for someone else.”
