UK snow maps reveal 460 mile barrage and -6C Arctic blast to hit days before Christmas

looks set to hit a 460-mile long swathe of the UK amid a freezing -4C Arctic blast in the run up to Christmas Day, the latest show.

Brits could be waking up to the white stuff from the coasts of northern of Scotland down through the Highlands and the Pennines to Greater Manchester at, with maps generated by WX Charts showing snow at 6am on December 22.

Depths could reach 9mm in central Scotland while elsewhere the snow won’t be so deep, with 1mm across other parts of the country and areas in the North of England.

Netweather maps identify a risk of snow upwards of 80% in some parts of the UK, particularly the Scottish Highlands, Scottish Borders, South Lanarkshire and the east of Dumfries and Galloway.

The risk is also high along elevated parts of the border between Cumbria and Northumberland, according to Netweather’s snow risk map for 3am on December 22.

Britain also looks set to be plunged into a deep freeze, with one temperature map generated on Friday (December 6) by WX Charts showing lows of up to -6C in central Scotland during the early hours of December 22.

The ‘s long range weather forecast, covering December 20 to January 3, says some sleet and snow is possible at times, particularly on high ground.

It says most will see unsettled conditions, including spells of wind and rain, with showers affecting most areas but especially the north or northwest.

Temperatures are tipped by the forecaster to be around average for the time of year, with any settled spells bringing the risk of frost and fog.

Netweather also forecasts snow over December 16-22, with it being possible at times, especially in the north. It says snow could result via showers from northerly and north-westerly winds, as well as from frontal systems pushing into cold air.

Substantial levels of snow on the ground are unlikely to reach low levels to the south of the Midlands though, according to Netweather.

Headline: A fine start but Storm Darragh will arrive later.

Today saw a fine but chilly start, with scattered showers in parts of north and west Scotland this morning. Rain will be heavy at times and reach western parts of the country in the afternoon. Winds will strengthen and gales develop.

Tonight will bring outbreaks of rain, which will be heavy at times and move east overnight as winds continue to strengthen. Gales and later severe gales are to develop as Storm Darragh arrives.

Saturday will be wet and very windy, with severe gales possible in places, particularly in the west with Storm Darragh. Rain will fall as snow across parts of northern Scotland.

It will turn colder on Sunday and Monday with showers and blustery winds forecast to gradually ease. High pressure will turn things drier and brighter later on Monday and into Tuesday, with some mist and fog.
