Mushrooms taste delicious on a full English breakfast or incorporated into a soup or risotto. However, mushrooms can quickly turn bad in the fridge, especially if they’re not .

With this in mind, mushroom expert Elliot Webb from , has shared .

The mushroom expert said one of the most common mistakes people make is storing mushrooms in their packaging in the fridge.

Swapping plastic supermarket packaging for a simple alternative will ensure they last longer.

He explains: “Mushrooms are incredibly delicate due to their high water content, which makes proper storage essential to maintaining their freshness.

“One of the most common mistakes people make is leaving them in the plastic packaging they come in, as this traps moisture and accelerates spoilage.

“Instead, transferring them to a paper bag lined with kitchen towel provides better airflow and absorbs excess moisture, significantly extending their shelf life.”

Elliot said mushrooms stored this way can “last up to seven days”. He also recommended keeping mushrooms whole rather than slicing them.

Sliced mushrooms usually only keep for one to two days, while whole mushrooms last longer. He added: “Keeping them whole and avoiding pre-washing them is key to ensuring they don’t deteriorate too quickly.”

If you do have mushrooms that are on the turn, they don’t have to be chucked away.

“Cooking not only enhances their flavour but also prevents unnecessary food waste,” Elliot added.
