All Creatures Great and Small enthusiasts will be thrilled to learn that Helen Herriot actress, Rachel Shenton, is set to return to Channel 5 in a brand-new suspense-filled series, The Rumour. She will portray Joanna, a young mother seeking a fresh start.

The cast boasts some big names including Wolf Hall’s Joanne Whalley, Rivals’ Emily Atack, and Doctor Who’s Samuel Anderson. Ellie Haddington, Lucy Speed, Liza Sadovy, Carryl Thomas, Tamzin Griffin, Alex Waldmann and Okezie Morro are also linked to the project.

Viewers will be gripped as Joanna relocates with her young son, Alfie, to the tranquil town of Flinstead. In search of a new beginning, she becomes embroiled in the lives of local mothers and the disconcerting cliques within the community.

The synopsis reveals: “When Joanna stumbles upon an online rumour about a child killer living in the town, she uses it to win over the mums at the school gate. As gossip spreads, suspicions build, and Joanna finds herself drawn into a web of secrets and paranoia.”

“Balancing her efforts to protect her son with the growing unease in town, Joanna struggles to distinguish between truth and hearsay. With relationships strained and emotions running high, the boundaries between trust and fear blur.”

The series, based on the Sunday Times bestselling book by Lesley Kara, will demonstrate how rapidly such gossip can spiral out of control.

Rachel Shenton is over the moon with her latest endeavour, stating: “I’m really excited to play Joanna.”

“The Rumour is a story of a woman unravelling as she relentlessly pursues the truth. She’s very relatable and the cast are amazing. It’s lovely to work with so many women.”

Channel 5 viewers can look forward to gripping television as filming for ‘The Rumour’ is underway, with anticipations set for a 2025 premiere.

Dixie Linder from Cuba Pictures asserted that the narrative explores the “unsettling impact of gossip, paranoia, and suspicion in a close-knit community”.

While Rebecca Dundon of Global Drama and Fremantle International described ‘The Rumour’ as a “razor-sharp psychological drama that turns everyday gossip into a weapon”.
