Outlander fans ‘refuse to believe’ key character is dead after ‘cheap cliffhanger’

Warning – this article contains major spoilers for Outlander season seven.

The latest instalment of Outlander, Brotherly Love, has left fans reeling with the bombshell that a pivotal character may have met their demise – but is this really the end?

Just weeks after Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) was summoned to Philadelphia to assist Lord John Grey (David Berry), she receives the devastating news that could shatter her world.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), while sailing across the Atlantic to be with his beloved wife, is reported to have perished when his ship is declared lost at sea, leaving no survivors.

Initially in denial, Claire eventually retreats to her room to mourn the unforeseen tragedy.

Complicating the situation further, Lord Grey realises the British Army will soon target Claire due to her support for the rebellion and proposes marriage as a means to protect her.

Despite the heart-wrenching development, many viewers remained sceptical on Friday night, doubting the show would eliminate Jamie without a proper on-screen farewell.

Fans took to to discuss the episode, with one stating: “Rule #1 of TV/Film: If we didn’t see them die on screen, THEY AREN’T DEAD.

“I won’t let them trick me. Cannot wait to see Jamie wash up on the beach to find Lord John and Claire married.”

Scepticism wasn’t limited to those familiar with Diana Gabaldon’s novels; even those who haven’t delved into the books questioned the plot, with one asking: “Does anyone actually believe Jamie is dead?

“If you’ve read the books or somehow know either way PLEASE don’t spoil it, but I just think there’s no possible way he’s dead.”

Another fan concurred, stating: “I never believe they are dead until I see the death on screen.”

Which sparked a response from another user: “And we’re talking about one of the two main characters.

“He’s not dying off screen in the 2nd episode of a new midseason… Very cheap and rushed cliffhanger imo.”

Similar frustrations were aired on X (formerly Twitter) post-episode.

One viewer humorously remarked: “I appreciate the drama but not a single soul believes Jamie is dead.”

While another was adamant: “… regarding this week’s episode of Outlander. I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT.

“THEY BETTER PULL A supernatural and BRING HIM BACK this instance.”

Speculation is rife whether Jamie will reappear miraculously in the upcoming weeks, or if the remainder of Outlander’s final seasons will take an unexpected turn.

Outlander season seven part two continues Fridays on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK and on Starz in the US.
