legend Ian Smith has revealed he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer as he steps down from his iconic role as Harold Bishop.

Ian has been playing the role since 1987, but has decided to quit the show after returning in 2022. 

He told Ten News on Monday: “I found out a few months back that I have cancer,” as he explained his doctor had told him he has a “very aggressive non-fixable cancer”.

He added, “And they expect me to … they expect me to die.”

Ian also revealed he filmed his final scenes and said goodbye to the soap’s cast and set towards the end of November, with scenes written to accommodate his news.

Over his 27 year stint, Ian left briefly in 1991 but returned again in 1996, before exiting again 2009 before coming back in 2011 and 2015.

He then left fans thrilled as he made a surprise return in 2022 as a series regular. 

His exit date or details about his departure storyline is yet to be confirmed, but reports have claimed the actor will stay on screens until next year. 

A Network 10 spokesperson said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened to hear of Ian Smith’s cancer diagnosis.

“A cherished member of the Neighbours family, Ian has been the heart and soul of the show since he first arrived on Ramsay Street in 1987.

“Ian has brought joy, laughter and inspiration to audiences all around the world for decades.

“Along with the cast and crew and all his fans from around the world, we will support Ian in any way we can during this difficult time.”

Addressing his exit, Neighbours boss Jason Herbison said: “Despite the challenges he was facing with his health, he wanted to give Harold a proper send-off. It was a very emotional moment on set as we paid tribute to him and the incredible contribution he has made to the show.”
