Carjacking suspect in hospital after police-involved shooting: VPD

A BMW was stolen early Sunday before officers shot at a suspect during the arrest about half an hour later

Vancouver police shot and injured a suspect after an alleged carjacking early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to a 911 call at about 4 a.m. A security guard said a stranger brandishing a knife and a broken glass bottle stole his black BMW sedan from the 900-block of Main Street, not far from Science World.

The suspect took off, but police spotted the stolen car being driven near Slocan Street and East 23rd Avenue about 25 minutes later.

“The police-involved shooting occurred as the officers were taking the driver, who was considered armed and dangerous, into custody,” said VPD spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison in a news release.

The suspect, who has not been identified, is under police guard in hospital being treated for an injury to his arm. He faces charges for robbery and weapons and driving offences.

No officers or members of the public were injured.

Shortly after the shooting, the VPD notified the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO), the civilian agency that looks into police incidents involving serious injury or death.

The IIO will first determine whether the man’s injury meets the threshold for serious harm; if so, the agency will investigate to determine whether the use of force was “necessary, reasonable, and proportionate under the circumstances.”
