The Egyptian star set up the first goal for Cody Gakpo to tap home and struck home from the penalty spot to put ‘s men nine points clear at the top and 12 clear of City.

The 32-year-old had come under fire from Carragher in recent days after discussing his future publicly ahead of their midweek victory over Real Madrid, with the for turning the attention back to him.

But Salah wasn’t about to let Carragher’s comments go unanswered in his post-match interview with team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

When Van Dijk was asked to choose between himself and Salah for man of the match, the Dutchman quipped: “I’m surprised Carragher wouldn’t give it to you.”

A smiling Salah then replied: “Ah no, he [Carragher] wouldn’t give it to me. Never. He wouldn’t! I don’t want to talk about this!”

Seconds later, presenter David Jones asked Carragher for his take on Salah’s comments – and the hero, 46, made a cheeky joke at the expense of his studio colleague .

Referencing Keane’s bust-up with an Ipswich Town fan last week, Carragher joked that he would arrange to meet Salah “in the carpark” after he called him out.

Carragher had criticised Salah’s attempts to put pressure on the club to hand him a new contract after claiming he was “more out than in”.

“I must say I am very disappointed with Salah. That interview yesterday, have got Real Madrid midweek and they’ve got at the weekend. That’s the story for right now,” he said on Tuesday.

He added: “The most important thing is winning the – that is more important than any of those players. And if he continues to put comments out or his agent keeps putting cryptic tweets out, that’s selfish. That’s thinking about themselves and not the football club.”

Salah once again addressed his comments about his future after the win over City and admitted he was keen to savour what could be his final home game against their title rivals inside the fiery Anfield cauldron.

“It’s very special. I don’t take it for granted. I’m enjoying every minute here. It feels like home,” Salah added. “It’s always special feeling always scoring at Anfield and winning games.”

On his contract situation, he added: “Honestly it’s in my head. Until now this is the last City game I will play for so I was just going to enjoy it.

“The atmosphere was incredible so I will enjoy every second here. Hopefully we just win the league and will see what will happen.”
