Snow maps show which areas of Britain freezing arctic blast is set to batter

Icy temperatures and unsettled conditions are forecast to continue into mid-December. Weather maps by WX Charts issued on November 30 show a large area of purple, indicating snow, covering Scotland at 6pm on Sunday 15. One map indicates up to 5cm per hour of snowfall could fall across the area.

Northern England as well as areas in Northern Ireland and Wales will also face wetter conditions, expecting a giant blanket of rainfall reaching 7mm per hour, weather maps suggest.

Maps show snow settling in western Scotland as the higher points will see 2cm on the ground.

Other areas in the UK will face stormy conditions bringing in a blanket of rain across the north. However, the Midlands, southwest and southeast of England will remain dry, with the south of Northern Ireland and eastern Wales dodging the showers too.

December 15 will also bring extreme windchill to parts of the nation, with Scotland facing the brunt of the colder temperatures. Wind Chill Index charts from WXCharts show -5C covering the majority of Scotland, with areas in and around Northumberland facing the same chillier feel.

The south of England will be slightly milder, with deeper greens indicating 10C towards Devon and Cornwall, with London hovering around 7C at midday.

According to the ’s long range forecast, the week commencing December 16 and the previous weekend will see high pressure remaining dominant across the south, bringing in more settled conditions compared to the north of the UK.

However the weather forecaster predicts more unsettled conditions in the northwest of England, with frontal systems still affecting the top of the country. A greater prevalence of rain and showers will cover these areas, with more wintry conditions on higher ground.

Later into the month of December, there are signals that higher pressure may re-establish itself again, bringing with it more settled conditions across the south of England.

Despite the strong winds bringing in icier temperatures in mid-December, more average figures will appear later into the month, yet colder interludes with frost and fog can be expected.
