Inside Stephen Mulhern’s year from hell after ‘collapse in Pizza Express’ and dad’s death

was rushed to hospital after a frightening collapse at a Pizza Express. The 47-year-old, known for hosting , has been facing challenging times following the loss of his father and is said to have had an adverse reaction to medication post-anesthesia.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday evening when Mulhern, who had earlier undergone a medical procedure requiring anaesthesia, visited the restaurant.

Paramedics attended to him before transporting him to a Surrey hospital for further checks as a safety measure. He is now thought to be recuperating at home.

A source told : “Stephen has had an incredibly tough time over the past few weeks. His beloved father recently passed away which has hit him hard and has been understandably very stressful.

“In addition he had a procedure which took place yesterday (Wednesday). Following the anaesthetic that was administered, he had a few drinks which made him unwell and he was taken to hospital as a precaution. He is now back home recovering.”

According to The Sun, during the ordeal, Stephen was speaking with his mother on the phone, offering her reassurance about his condition.

The source continued: “Stephen is recovering well at home now, and is resting up. He’s so grateful for the care he received, and is mortified that he had such an awful – and public – reaction to the anaesthetic.”

Stephen Mulhern’s close friend , with whom he presents the new game show You Bet!, has reportedly been a pillar of support for him during his recent health struggles.

The classic show, which originally ran between 1988 and 1997 with Bruce Forsyth, Matthew Kelly and Darren Day as hosts, will return on Saturday, December 7.

In November, Stephen finally discussed the alarming sickness that took him off screens in 2022. The television presenter was urgently admitted to hospital with an undisclosed ailment in March that year, subsequently recuperating on doctor’s orders.

When Stephen missed several episodes of , his absence set off alarm bells among fans.

After a three-week disappearance from television, Stephen reached out to his followers with a comforting update.

Taking to Twitter/X, he expressed: “Hello all, Sorry I’ve been quiet on here recently and thank you for all your lovely messages. I’ve had some time off and been resting up on doctor’s orders.”

He continued: “I’m on the mend, I’m happy to say, and looking forward to getting back to work soon. In the meantime…I’ll put my feet up and watch Saturday Night Takeaway tonight with the rest of you lot. Please don’t miss me too much! Lots of love, Stephen.”

Since then, Stephen has instituted precautions to manage prolonged filming schedules more effectively.

While he refrained from disclosing details about his condition, his comments suggested a serious concern, mentioning: “Now we’re all right. But it wasn’t good. It was a bit of a worrying time.”
