One of the UK’s most popular routes has been branded the “most haunted” in Britain with motorists left baffled at peculiar sightings.

According to experts at , the M6  “has been found to be the most haunted road” in the country.

Specialists claim road users have previously spotted “Roman soldiers, a distraught woman hitchhiker, ghost cars that look like they’ve just been in a serious collision, and a phantom lorry going the wrong way”.

The 230-mile route runs from Rugby in Warwickshire to Gretna in Scotland, with around 17.7 million vehicles using it every day.

Along this route, an is an ancient hotspot and has previously been dubbed the new “Bermuda Triangle”.

The site has even been visited by international psychic Mike Brooker, who claimed to be “investigating” the area for possible paranormal activity.

Mike stressed the number of accidents on the fairly straight stretch of road was “unprecedented”.

He admitted history could provide the answers with the route possibly built on a Roman burial site.

Mike also theorised that the area could have been the location of a Scottish army slaughter around 200 years ago.

DON’T MISS [COMMENT]

He previously told : “I personally know people who have lost their lives and families who have been affected by accidents on this stretch of motorway.

“I am investigating this and I need people to give me whatever evidence they have; sightings or experiences or even strange occurrences.

“I am leaning towards the theory that it can be connected to Saxon involvement. There are reports of a Roman burial ground and that there was an historic clash between Scottish and English armies. There are so many variables and possibilities.”

Historians also believe that Barthomley Church, which sits close to junction 16, could be to blame.

This is where Parliamentarians staying in the church were supposedly attacked by royalist Soldiers during the Civil War.

Sightings coordinator Tony Simmons previously commented: “We assumed Britain’s spookiest road would turn out to be a dark lane near an ancient battlefield. But, when you think about it, these findings make sense.

“The M6 is one of Britain’s longest roads and it travels through many counties – and therefore an immense amount of history.”
