Cleethorpes was named one of the UK’s ‘worst seaside towns’.
Fans have leapt to the defence of a UK that was recently named the “most rundown” and one of the “worst” in the country.
Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire was given these unfortunate titles by user Hatty Turner, who goes by “H4 The Horror Tour” online. It was also named one of the six worst UK seaside towns by The Telegraph last year.
Hatty picked out the north east seaside town as “one of the UK’s WORST” because of its polluted beaches in a video that now has thousands of views.
The caption reads: “In recent years, Cleethorpes has faced negative press due to issues related to warnings on its beaches, particularly from sewages discharges in the sea.
“This raised environmental concerns in 2021, with local councillors to prevent waste from affecting the coast.
:
Cleethorpes beach has struggled with pollution and sewage.
“The pollution led to worries about water quality and the potential loss of the town’s Blue Flag beach status, a key asset for tourism in the area. Another recent news article claims the area is the ‘toughest place in the UK to be female’.”
In the video, Hatty details the boom and subsequent bust of Cleethorpes’ industry from the 1950s to the 2010s. She describes how it was once “fashionable” for people to visit the town, with its promenade and Victorian pier.
However, during the 1980s and 1990s, Cleethorpes “struggled with the economical decline as visitor numbers decrease”. This leads into the 2010s, which has seen , including refurbishing the boating lake.
Unfortunately, this has been somewhat overshadowed by a human foot washing up on the beach, the Cleethorpes Carnival being cancelled after 40 years and sewage discharge preventing the beach from gaining its Blue Flag award back.

One person wrote: “It’s so sad to see Cleethorpes on here, I remember visiting very often with my grandparents and even after my nannan passed, my grandad would take me round the 1p machines and we’d grab doughnuts.”
Another commented: “Cleethorpes is a lovely place, all seaside resorts have !!”
Someone new to the area simple said they “love it”.
