Popular UK Christmas market among most crowded in Europe branded ‘expensive’ and ‘smaller’

In the UK, cities like York and Birmingham attract visitors from across the nation and beyond who want to immerse themselves in the festive spirit.

However, one well-known seems to be gathering some less flattering reviews due to its increased prices and what some claim is a downsizing from previous years.

The Market is held annually in the heart of the Scottish capital, and this year came second to its -based counterpart in ’s report into ‘s most overcrowded Christmas markets.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh’s Old Town, particularly around East Princes Street Gardens and the Scott Monument, the market blends traditional European Christmas market charm with a Scottish twist.

Visitors can browse for unique Christmas presents, Scottish artisan crafts, and festive decorations, and local food vendors offer comfort foods like roast chestnuts and bratwurst and Scottish delicacies such as shortbread and haggis.

The market also features funfair rides that appeal to both children and adults, including the famous Big Wheel, which offers stunning views of the city, and looks particularly dazzling when lit up during the winter months.

But despite making for a lovely Saturday evening night out or Sunday afternoon stroll, some visitors this year left feeling underwhelmed – with some even taking to Tripadvisor to share their frustration.

Reviewer Coinneach wrote: “Getting smaller year on year and very disappointing. Definitely not worth going out of your way to visit unless you enjoy buying expensive food outdoors.”

Simon S added: “This was, by far, the worst experience I ever had on a holiday: an incredibly congested, insanely crowded and generic event, not worth the stress, long queues and utter chaos.

“The food was average to very bad, and although there are plenty of stands, there are almost no standing tables or seats where you can enjoy your food.”

Giving the market a rating of one star, Kane M echoed: “Too busy, ridiculously expensive and very small with very limited choices.

“I live in Edinburgh and won’t ever return, if you are visiting the city please find something else to do.”

But despite the bad reviews, some seemed to enjoy the experience, with Greenpinkorange arguing: “Seen lots of poor reviews but this is the best Christmas market in the UK.

“Loads of stalls, free light walk, rides and open till late. You don’t have to buy anything if you think the prices are too high – just enjoy the experience!”

Claire L added: “Visited on Friday no queues at all we arrived around 4.30pm and it wasn’t very busy.

“We was able to visit all the stalls and have a good look around great food and drink and lots of lovely gifts.” [sic]
