Last chance to watch the greatest World War II film ever before leaving Amazon Prime Video

Over the decades, there have been so many incredible films covering every aspect and angle of the most deadly conflict in human history.

But according to IMDb fan rankings, the very best action movie in the genre is an Oscar-winning classic.

Upon its release in 1998, World War II veterans found Saving Private Ryan’s combat scenes, including the opening sequence of D-Day, incredibly realistic of their own experiences.

In fact, some of the war heroes found it so visceral that they could not continue watching.

’s war epic, only surpassed on IMDb by his very own Schindler’s List, stars as US Captain John H Miller. The school teacher turned soldier is tasked with locating Matt Damon’s Private Ryan to have him sent home because his three other brothers had been killed in action.

An impressive project, the Omaha Beach scene cost $12 million to shoot for over a month with 1500 extras. . Considered one of the greatest films of all time, Saving Private Ryan won five Oscars. And in a 2015 poll of Academy votes, given another opportunity, they would have voted for the film to be Best Picture.

The movie features an incredible cast of future A-listers, including Vin Diesel, Bryan Cranston, Nathan Fillion and Paul Giamatti.

Following its success, Spielberg and Hanks created the incredible miniseries Band of Brothers, which followed the 101st Airborne through the war. This has been followed up by The Pacific and, most recently, Masters of the Air.
