The refurbishment works, which first began in 2017, also means that King Charles has had to relocate his private office in the palace from the north wing to the Belgian Suite on the ground floor of the palace’s west-facing Garden Wing.

This new workspace includes the Orleans Room, the same room where the King was born on November 14, 1948.

A friend of the King reportedly said: “He is always aware of the significance of history, and the decision to be based in the Orleans Room won’t have been taken without half a smile.”

Since 2017, restoration has taken place throughout the palace to replace ageing cabling and plumbing systems that were last updated in the 1950s.

This year, after having begun in 2018. This includes the famous central balcony area facing the Mall, which visitors were invited to see for the first time this summer.

The restoration work has been funded through the taxpayer-funded sovereign grant and will continue to be temporarily paused each summer to allow visitors access to the Palace.

Although the King works from the Palace, he is believed to spend plenty of time at other royal residences including the nearby Clarence House, as well as Balmoral in Scotland.

The King and Queen Camilla also spend plenty of time at Highgrove House, their private home in Gloucestershire.

Over the Christmas period, the King will be hosting , with , Princess Kate and their three children expected to attend.
