A pretty mountain village on the Greek island of Crete has been named as one of the UN’s best.
The picturesque village of Anogia on the island of has been voted one of the very best villages in the world – and there’s a very special reason why it might have caught judges’ attentions.
The quaint mountain village has been specifically recognised as an “Outstanding Destination” in the “Rural ” category, amongst 55 best villages other amazing places by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
Perched on the slopes of Psiloritis, or Mount Ida, at an altitude of 700 metres, the village’s surrounding area is just waiting to be explored.
And one cave known as Ideon Cave is where – according to mythology – the god was raised by the nymphs Adrasteia and Ida.

The village has a central square, which is used in the summer for musical and theatrical performances, as well as several villas and hidden cafes.
The area is also famous for its traditional Cretan music, with the pastime being a central part of local life. Many also pursue traditional weaving, including textiles that reflect the region’s heritage. And don’t forget the Skinakas Observatory which offers the opportunity for visitors to and see celestial objects.
2024 marks the fourth edition of the UNWTO’s best villages awards, which this year recognises 55 villages from over 260 applications from more than 60 UN Tourism Member States. It aims to advance tourism’s role in rural areas, preserving landscapes, cultural diversity, local values and culinary traditions.
In order to qualify, the villages must show proof of , the connection of local communities with mild forms of tourism and the promotion of environmental protection.

The tiny village of Anogia has been recognised by a special award.

“We celebrate the villages that have embraced tourism as a pathway to empowerment and community well-being, demonstrating that sustainable practices can lead to a brighter future for all.”
