has welcomed desire to meet for dinner – especially if the new head coach offers to pay. The legendary United midfielder turned pundit has joked he’s open to sitting down with the new boss, who previously admitted his wish to wine and dine with some of the club’s heroes.

He named Keane, Eric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand and Sir Alex Ferguson as examples of the Old Trafford icons he’d love to meet.

And in an interview with earlier this week, Amorim heaped further praise on the former Red Devils captain.

“He was a player that I really liked. I know he’s a little bit crazy! But he was a massive player, and I like players with character,” the Portuguese coach explained at Carrington.

“It was not just what did on the pitch; it was the way he influenced the others. I think that is very important.

“You must have this kind of player in the big clubs and I hope we’ll have, in the future, players like .”

And Keane has since reacted to Amorim’s dinner dream, opening the door to an introductory meal in true fashion.

Ahead of kick-off at Portman Road, he told the Sky Sports studio: “If he wants to take me out for dinner and he wants to pay for it, that is well and good!”

The Amorim era started against Ipswich Town in East Anglia after a two-week wait since he landed in Manchester from Sporting.

The 39-year-old made some big calls in his first team as United boss, dropping Manuel Ugarte and to the bench.

He named Amad his right-wing back in a new-look 3-4-3 system. Meanwhile, Noussair Mazraoui started alongside and Jonny Evans in the back three, with Lisandro Martinez injured.

Before kick-off, Amorim explained that he had selected his maiden line-up around players who had spent more time on the training pitch with him this week.

“Some of the lads, they just have one training, one training is not enough,” Amorim explained in the Portman Road tunnel.

“So I want my players comfortable, and it will be time for everybody during this sequence of games.”

He added: “It’s not difficult, and that is the key point, the time that we have to train.

“So I try to put the players [in] that I have more time to train, and we will start in this way because we need to train. We need to pass the information.

“Today is different, so it’s a new life. Let’s start with the small details. That’s what I want, and I want my players to win the game, and they are capable of doing that.”
