Central heating can dry the air out in people’s homes which can have a huge impact on skin and hair
1. Wasted energy
continue to be high in the UK, and the recent price cap rise has added further pressure on households. Leaving your central heating running throughout the night means you’ll likely be left with a hefty energy bill.
Jess Steele, a heating technology expert at BestHeating has shared the best way to keep warm at night without leaving the heating on.
She suggesting, “having your radiators running for a few hours in the evening and then set a timer so that the heating comes on an hour before you plan to wake up”.
She added: “That way you don’t need to completely turn the heating off and your boiler won’t have to work as hard to come back on.”

Another effect of leaving the heating on high overnight is mould growth
Laura Elliott, head stylist and educator at Neäl & Wølf explained: “Spending a lot of time in a centrally heated environment can do more damage than good for your locks. Over the winter period hair can dry out making it look and feel more brittle, split ends become more of a regular occurrence and this could all be down to the central heating.
“To combat these issues and transform lacklustre strands, I would firstly recommend increasing your use of conditioning treatments as this will help to bring some moisture back.”
She added: “Secondly, try limiting stress factors that can cause more damage to your hair in winter. Avoid excessive heat styling as this can strip natural oils further and instead try heatless styles.”
3. Mould on walls
Another effect of leaving the heating on high overnight is mould growth. Ms Steele said putting the heating on for short periods of time can help prevent mould growth.
However, having it on overnight can cause warm air to trap excess moisture. The expert explained: “When the warm air comes into contact with the icy cold windows, it can cause window condensation which then develops into a mould problem.”
Those struggling to keep warm at night could opt for flannel sheets and fleece bedding to keep warm.
