This city in South America is in one of the most vibrant and exciting countries the continent has to offer.

Quito, the capital of , is dramatically situated high up in the Andes, it is squeezed between mountain peaks. As the city located closest to the equator, Quito directly overlaps the equatorial line.

Its warm comes with its position and has led the city to explode since it was first established in 1534 by the Spanish explorers.

Quito is a blend of new and old with modern apartment buildings and modest concrete homes.

It is a bustling city with signs of traditional scattered across its streets.

The city is home to many popular tourist attractions such as the Museo Templo del Sol Pintor Ortega Maila.

This temple was built by the indigenous painter and sculptor Ortega Maila, it has a unique design featuring ancestral architecture.

One visitor on said: “This is a place that would appeal to all of your senses. The visit of the temple is with a guided tour (English is spoken), which starts with a cleansing ritual. The temple is beautiful, with stunning exhibits. A small store sells lovely scents of natural incense and stones.

“Wander around the complex yard/garden and admire the mesmerising statues by Ortega Maila, who happened to be there when I visited! He was kind and friendly and posed for a photo with me. Do not miss to visit this magical place if you are in Quito and the area.”

Quito has been one of the “top destinations in South America” – the city has an impressive range of beautiful natural landscapes as well as an exciting city.

One of the best nature sites to see is the Quilotoa Crater – this huge crater is a volcano now filled with a gorgeous blue lake.

A visitor on said: “If you are going to Ecuador you have to visit Quilotoa! I didn’t really know what to expect before arriving but I was blown away. Just go there, trust me! The view of the lake is absolutely amazing! 

“You will spend ages just staring at it, taking it all in. After checking out the initial view, you walk down into the Volcano. The walk takes about an hour but going down isn’t difficult. At the bottom there is a huge swing that you can go on to feel as if you are flying out over the water.”

Despite being located closest to the equator, the city’s positioning doesn’t impact it from day to day. Quito is a unique place to visit and one of the most varied cities the world has to offer.
