In June, workers completed the final deck sections, officially connecting the bridge and establishing it as an international border crossing.
The project is managed by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) with design led by AECOM.
The bridge is 1.55 miles (2.5km) long and 48 metres above the water.
Charl van Niekerk, the CEO of the WDBA, said: “After a three-year pandemic and considering the size and complexity of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, our project team is pleased that the impact to the construction schedule is limited to only 10 months beyond the original contracted completion date and that we could agree on a reasonable adjustment to the contract value.

“With safety as our top priority, we will continue to work together to deliver this much-needed infrastructure to the thousands of eager travellers ready to cross North America’s longest cable-stayed bridge.”
When complete, the bridge will connect two new ports of entry. The Canadian Port of Entry will be the largest along the US-Canada border, while the US Port of Entry will rank among the largest in North America.
Both facilities will include inspection stations, tolling areas and maintenance facilities.
The bridge is expected to ease congestion at the busy Windsor-Detroit border crossing, which is an important route for commercial traffic between the two countries.
