Picking up a decent tablet typically comes with a chunky price tag, especially if you’re looking to do high-end work like graphic design or video editing. If you only need something that will play a wide range of mobile games, stream video, and blow up a Good Food recipe on your countertop while you cook, you’d be surprised by how cost-effective tablets can be – just take the .

This nifty tablet is available in variety of options, with prices starting from £74.99 – thanks to its recent Black Friday discount. That will get you 32GB in storage and ads on the lock screen. As Amazon plugged the tablet at the top of its site pushing shoppers to it ‘i time for Christmas’ we’ve taken a look at what is has to offer.

The Fire HD 10, available in black, lilac and blue, offers 25%-faster performance over its predecessor and has 3GB of RAM to help with multi-tasking and quick loading. It’s got a 10.1-inch full HD screen that’s strengthened enough to tolerate the occasional fall, and it’s got a front-facing camera for video calling too.

It’s compatible with a stylus sold-separately, which is ideal for notetaking. Not only that, but it’s got a range of parental control features so you can pass it to the little ones with confidence.

With 4.6 out of 5 stars averaged across almost 2,500 Amazon ratings, it’s fair to say more than lives up to most customers’ expectations. “Nice size tablet, good size and easy to use,” said a five-star review. “This is an upgrade from my Fire 8 which I still love. Easy for reading my Kindle book, surfing the net and playing games. Really good value for money I would recommend.”

“Great picture and sound and easy to use. Quick to charge and holds charge better than my old one,” said another happy customer. “Would definitely recommend.”

Another added: “Bought this 10″ Fire tablet to replace 8″ version that had been used heavily for quite a while. The new tablet is a great improvement, with a much faster processor and the screen is much larger and more responsive.”

Some have raised issues with it, however, with one shopper writing: “Being used to an iPhone/iPad it’s all a bit fiddly trying to find out where all the settings are.” Another customer said they felt its power upgrades were lacking over the Fire HD 8: “As I use this mostly for streaming movie apps I am disappointed. Don’t see any visible evidence of faster processing speed over my Fire HD 8. Picture quality is very good but the sound requires urgent upgrading.”

If you’re looking for alternatives, there aren’t many worthwhile options at this price point. Further up the pecking order, though, there’s the  for £369 which will do almost as much as the flagship tablet. Elsewhere, the  from Currys is exceptionally powerful and has a cute, handheld form factor that makes it nice and versatile.

But for a solid tablet that won’t break the bank this Christmas, you could do a lot worse than the .
