What to look for in a laptop

When buying a new laptop there are plenty of considerations. The starting point should really be to decide what you’re going to use it for. If it’s just for casual emailing, then you don’t need all the graphical power of a gaming laptop. If you’re going to be working on the move you want something thin and light and if there are certain applications you need to run, that might also dictate your choice.

Then you have your budget: Apple’s are typically expensive, but they last a long time, so you’d be better buying one computer, than having to replace something cheap in 2 year’s time. The MacBook family are well supported by Apple from a software point of view, so they will last, while there are plenty of accessories too, like covers and cases. MacBooks using the Apple M chips also have really long battery life.

Windows still makes up the majority of laptop sales and it’s still the platform that’s the most versatile when it comes to applications. Most workplaces still use Windows and so too do many universities. Windows has gone through something of a revolution in 2024 with the evolution of , with Snapdragon hardware now providing battery life and power that rivals the MacBook, but that’s typically the most expensive option.

If you’re after affordability, then you have lots of choices of Windows laptops, but are typically affordable too. Chromebook essentially runs like it’s a Chrome browser, with access to Google apps. If you spend most of your time browsing and emailing, or on basic document creation like word processing or spreadsheets, then a Chromebook could suit you just fine – and save you a lot of money.

Amazon isn’t the only retailer with price drops on its site as tech rivals including , Argos,   (and a whole lot more) also unveil their sales before the end of November date.
