US embassy lockdown LIVE: Police swarm London area as ‘controlled explosion carried out’

Police swarmed the US embassy in London and carried out a controlled explosion, the Met Police said.

The Met Police confirmed they were responding to an incident in the area. 

The force said: ” We’re aware of speculation online about an incident in the vicinity of the US Embassy in Nine Elms. Cordons are in place in the area as a precaution while officers investigate a suspect package. We will provide a further update in due course.”

Officers confirmed the “loud bang” heard in the area was a controlled explosion. 

The US Embassy London said: ” Local authorities are investigating a suspicious package outside the U.S. Embassy in London. Met Police are present and have closed Ponton Road out of an abundance of caution.  We will provide further updates when available.”

Ponton Road in Nine Elms has been closed “out of an abundance of caution” after a “suspicious package” was found near the US embassy building.

Met Police officers carried out a “controlled explosion” a short while ago, according to the force.

Police confirm loud bang at US embassy

The Met Police has confirmed that a “loud bang” heard at the US embassy today as a “controlled explosion” carried out by officers.

The force says enquiries are underway and cordons will remain at the scene indefinitely.
