Letters to The Province: Alternative way to start off a new CFL season

All these CFL coaches, GMs — and most players — just rotate from team to team. Just another “can of soup” to fill a spot on the shelf. But what else are these guys going to do? It’s only a nine-team league. Most major Canadian cities have more than nine high school teams.

To cut back on the  boring “speech-ifying,” every March they should just throw everybody’s name in a hat (coaches and players), and then each owner gets to pull out 40 names. “Heat and serve” — presto, another CFL season.

Who would notice the difference?

Huge pay raises for ministers while British Columbians struggle

Well, I sincerely hope that people in B.C. are happy and proud of the NDP government’s choice to immediately give huge pay raises to all but one MLA. An increase of $60,000 yearly for ministers, $42,000 for junior ministers and a tiny $18,000 increase for the poor 14 parliamentary secretaries. Imagine how many people who need to frequent food banks those increases would feed. But thinking back, the vast amount of money it cost Surrey taxpayers to switch from the RCMP to the Surrey Police Service was a total waste, caused by then-Safety Minister Mike Farnworth, who is now minister of transportation with a $60,000 yearly pay raise. It’s okay, people. No need to panic. There will be another election in four short years.

Many desperately need mail

With the current postal strike it is quite obvious that many people and businesses, including charity organizations, desperately need mail service. Hopefully, the strike will be settled very soon. Being an avid stamp collector with many traders all over the world, I rely on the post office as well. However, in the future, in an attempt to reduce the horrendous losses at Canada Post, I would suggest that it goes to a three-day-a-week delivery schedule. We don’t need five days a week. We should save lots of tax dollars by trying this method.
