star Dean McCullough screamed, cried and almost hyperventilated before quitting the Sinister Sarcophagus Trial last night – but James Jordan was unimpressed.

His wife – fellow former pro – was the first to comment sceptically on him, declaring: “I don’t believe one bit that he was scared of that #ImACeleb.” James then agreed: “I’m sure he’s a lovely guy but needs to work on his acting skills massively otherwise he will come across a bit fake as he’s definitely trying to play the game.”

Fans agreed, with one quipping: “Oh yes. He most certainly was acting there. Looking for a role probs.” A second suggested: “Both him and GK are over acting. Neither is as scared as they are trying to make out…they know that they will get more air time if they screech and scream.”

Others branded it “rubbish acting”, with one predicting that his histrionics “guarantee he’ll be doing the next trial”. Dean had screamed: “I’m freaking out!” after being locked into a mummy figurine and quickly branded the experience “my worst nightmare”.

As he was trapped inside, mealworms and crickets were poured inside the head compartment of the mummy, while he was standing in sand up to his thighs. He was then quizzed on a series of general knowledge questions about Egypt, which he’d have to answer correctly to win ten stars for his team.

However, the terrified radio host opted out of the trial after just two stars and yelled the code word, “I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!” to release himself from the trial.

The decision is sure to have made him less than popular with his hungry campmates, who’d been struggling alongside him in the jungle.

Meanwhile, viewers at home were puzzled that he seemed to have been more frightened by the sand engulfing his legs than the steady supply of insects joining him in the sarcophagus.

Apologising, he cringed: “It was the fact that I couldn’t move my legs… if there was no sand, I would still be in there!”

Although James and Ola don’t seem to have had much sympathy for poor Dean’s plight, the former was much more touched by Barry McGuigan, who spoke sadly of his daughter’s death to cancer.

“Barry Mcguigan has got me in tears – after seeing what my dad went through before he died I can’t never forget,” he tweeted.

“As my dad said – the worst thing would be to bury your child. Massive respect for Gary speaking out about grief.”

I’m A Celebrity continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
