Despite being essential to keep warm and keep at bay, cranking up the heating high will be costly.
Luckily, there are ways to keep the home as well as the bedroom warm without having to use the heating every time.
If you wish to limit the use of your heating, bedroom designer Adeel Ul-Haq from has shared his top tips for keeping warm without increasing your heating bill.

1. Insulating your sleep space
The expert said: “To stop yourself going cold without turning the heating on you need to optimise your insulation. We need to make the most of natural heat and keep as much of it in as possible.
“You can start with your blankets, layer them to trap air between the layers which will keep the air surrounding your body there for longer which will keep the heat in.
“If you have natural fibres in your duvet, even better as these fibres keep the air trapped for longer.”
If you have a spring mattress and a bed with a memory foam mattress or topper, the expert recommended moving into the bed with the memory foam as this is another form of insulation which will prevent the cold air from seeping upwards and keep you snug throughout the night.

2. Insulate your windows
Windows are one of the main reasons why a room loses heat, but luckily, there is a way to keep the heat in your bedroom and keep the heating off for longer.
This includes investing in thermal curtains, which are best for keeping the heat in. If you don’t have them, doubling up curtains can slow down the heat loss.
The expert said: “Using a second pair of curtains can create a double barrier against the cold, even something as simple as thin voile curtains can help.
“With your curtains, keep them closed at night and open them during the day to leave natural heat and light in the room.
“Winter creates the perfect environment for mould to grow and opening your curtains during the day will kill the mould spores as well as provide some natural heating.”
3. Insulate your floor
People often forget that heat can be lost through the floor and so insulating goes unnoticed.
The expert said: “If you have hard floors, a large area rug made of wool or other thick materials can act as an insulator, preventing heat from escaping through the floor.
“It also makes your space feel much cosier which can mentally make your room feel warmer too. Rugs can be expensive though, so I’d recommend checking places like Facebook marketplace or your local charity shop for more affordable rugs.”
4. Insulating your body
Layering clothing just like blankets can trap warm air close to your skin, however, this should not be overdone as it can be too warm and affect sleep quality.
The expert also advised against using a hot water bottle or electric blanket because they can cause injury if they are defective.
The pro noted: “Keeping your bedroom door closed is another simple but effective tactic and if you find your home is drafty you can make a homemade draught excluder by rolling up an old towel or blanket and placing it under the door.”
It’s also important to insulate other areas of the home as much as possible to keep the overall home as warm as possible.
