10. The Last Valley (1971)
Michael Caine stars as a mercenary leader in this historical drama set during the Thirty Years’ War of the 17th century. Based on the novel of the same name, the acting legend’s Captain and a teacher, played by Omar Sharif, discover a German valley untouched by war as they collaborate to preserve peace and harmony there.
9. Gambit (1966)
This heist comedy has Caine play a thief who teams up with a chorus girl, played by Shirley MacLaine, to steal a priceless antique bust. Gambit was nominated for three Oscars and was remade in 2012 with a script by the Coen Brothers and starring Colin Firth.
8. Alfie (1966)
Caine stars as a self-centred womaniser who breaks the fourth wall as he cheats on women and begins to question his behaviour and loneliness. Based on the play of the same name, the British classic was also remade in 2004, starring Jude Law.
7. The Ipcress File (1965)
The first of Caine’s five Harry Palmer spy movies, based on Sidney J Furie’s novel, is considered one of the greatest British films ever made. His portrayal of an intelligence officer as a regular man in glasses who cooks at home was in stark contrast to the romantic view of Cold War espionage portrayed in the Sean Connery James Bond movies.
