Keep towels ‘soft and fluffy’ by washing ‘correctly’ with cupboard staple – not detergent
Washing regularly is crucial in keeping them hygienic and clean, but it can mean they lose their softness.
This is especially true if you also use softeners within the wash with the thought of that helping.
However, according to one laundry expert, there are two household ingredients Britons should be using instead.
Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, said: “Both common household ingredients can be used separately as ways to transform rough towels into soft ones.
“Simply add 250ml of to the washing machine drum alongside the liquid detergent you normally use and dry as normal.

“You can also use to make your towels soft and fluffy. Mix eight tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with your laundry detergent before putting it in the washing machine.
“This will help loosen up the towel fibres and get rid of any dirt, keeping your towels as good as new.”
In order to keep towels soft and fluffy, it’s important to wash them “correctly”, according to the pro.
This involves not overloading the washing machine to ensure each towel can spin and wash properly.

For a normal-sized washing machine, six to seven towels should fit in at any one time.
Avoid using lots of detergent, or any at all when washing towels, as the baking soda and vinegar should be enough.
It’s also important to avoid fabric softeners as they can leave a residue on the towels over time.
Not only will the residue make the towels feel rough, but it will also make them less absorbent when drying.
If you still like the smell of fabric softener on towels, using it every three to four washes should be sufficient.
Deyan recommended washing towels after three uses to get rid of bacteria growth and smelly odours.
In some cases, you may want to wash them after every use, such as if you use them to mop up sweat or have a skin condition.
The pro added: “You should also let your towel dry fully after every use to prevent germs.”
