Before you get your knives ready for those spooky designs, it’s key to know the best time to carve your pumpkins.
Joshua Houston, an authority on home decoration from shares the ideal date for wielding your tools for maximum effect and longevity of your Jack-o’-Lanterns and no, you don’t have to hold off until October 31.
Joshua said: “Surprisingly, pumpkins can last anywhere between eight to twelve weeks, this means you can start planning your pumpkin-picking trip now.”

The best time to carve, according to Joshua, is from October 26 onwards. By doing so, you ensure your creation remains unspoiled for Halloween.
He said: “Aim to carve your pumpkin from October 26 onwards, this will ensure that it won’t be rotten come Halloween night.”
As for selecting the prime pumpkin to become your eerie exhibit, Joshua has invaluable advice. Inspect for any unsightly marks or damage which could hasten decay.
Feel the firmness; a too-soft pumpkin may already be on its way out. He said: “Hard pumpkins will last longer as one being soft is a sign that it’s already beginning to rot.”
Don’t overlook the stem, either. A vibrant green stem suggests the pumpkin needs more time to ripen, thus promising extended freshness.
Offering some guidance on the selection of your pumpkin, he said: “The size of your pumpkin should relate to your carving ability. Smaller ones are harder, so if you aren’t as crafty then maybe you should go big. This will give you more space to make the perfect creation.”
Joshua added: “Halloween is some people’s favourite time of the year, they love scary movies, along with the cold cosy nights. Pumpkin carving is a big part of the history, it’s great fun for couples and families.
“Just make sure to be careful with those knives, the last thing you want is a trip to AandE when you should be preparing for Halloween night.”
