has expressed his strong views on young girls adopting an anti-ageing skincare regime, a topic raised by his co-host Tina Daheley during their Friday show.

The DJ, father to daughters Phoebe, 19, and Amber, 14, with wife , was in agreement as Tina highlighted the mental and physical risks of teenagers buying into skincare products too early, influenced by promotions on and other social media platforms.

Tina broached the subject while previewing her Radio 2 show, filling in for regular host Jeremy Vine. She told Vernon: “We’re also looking at the obsession some girls have with skincare products designed for much older people.”

She added: “Now, I’m talking about nine-year-olds, 10-year-olds worrying about wrinkles and being influenced… I see you nodding away there… by social media – those tutorials – young girls showing their routines, getting ready for school, using all of these different products.”

She concluded: “It doesn’t need me to point out that it’s really bad for you – not only physically, but mentally – at that age to be obsessing about skin products that you don’t need.”

Vernon concurred with Tina, citing Tess as an example of someone who has maintained a simple skincare routine over the years.

He sighed: “Cleansing at such a young age… you don’t need to put chemicals on your face! Tess Daly from , she’s had the same routine since I’ve known her – morning and evening – same regime.”

Tina chimed in with praise for Tess, saying: “And look how great she looks,” to which Vernon agreed: “Yes, and it’s just bonkers!”.

He continued, expressing his personal experience as a father: “Like, our kids, I’m the father of two daughters and I’m going through this, I’m experiencing this.

“And it’s a product for this, and a product for that, it’s like – you don’t need it, you have wonderful skin – stop messing about!”.

Tina added her thoughts on the matter: “And, also, it’s expensive, number one, and damaging, because they’ve got these chemicals in peels and things that you don’t need.

“Not only don’t you need them, they can burn your skin and they can have the opposite effect, where they’re causing you to age prematurely.”

Vernon then shared his unique approach to dealing with the issue at home, telling Radio 2 listeners: “I keep saying, ‘give it to your dad, I’ll try it for you, because I look old and knackered – simple as that – give me your peel!’.”
