Updates for the 2025 Ford Expedition lineup include a more powerful base engine and new Tremor off-road trim
What’s new for the 2025 Ford Expedition?

The 2025 Ford Expedition has been totally restyled, with the front end adopting what Ford calls the “strong man” look. I’m not sure about the correctness of the description, but it is handsomely rugged. As before, it will be offered in regular and extended-wheelbase, or Max, models. Both ride on a redesigned suspension.
The big news, however, is the total rethink of the cabin. It’s clean, classy and ready to accommodate a family of up to eight in fine style. Key is the newfound versatility that includes a liftgate-tailgate configuration called the Split Gate. Along with the newly named Active and familiar Platinum and King Ranch models comes a new model — the off-road-ready Tremor. It promises to get the riders to the end of some gnarly trails!
What powers the 2025 Expedition?
- 3.5L twin-turbo V6, 400 hp, 480 lb-ft of torque
The engine is familiar — Ford’s 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 is the only offering. This time around, the base 380-horsepower tune goes away. This leaves the regular-output version with 400 hp and 480 pound-feet of torque as the starting point. The Tremor turns up the wick with the turbo V6 twisting out 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The high-output unit is an option in the Expedition Platinum.
The EcoBoost V6 works with a 10-speed automatic transmission to drive the rear or all four wheels. This combination gives the 2025 Expedition the ability to tow up to 3,175 kilograms (7,000 pounds) without trailer brakes; and 4,355 kg (9,601 lbs) with them.
The 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor means business
- Tremor adds 33-inch General Grabber all-terrains and 10.6 inches of ground clearance
Along with the more powerful engine, the Tremor gets a lot of off-road-oriented gear to give it more dirt ability. It has 270 millimetres (10.6 inches) of ground clearance and 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires, along with a re-tuned suspension; underbody skid plates for the front axle, transfer case, and fuel tank; and a Rock Crawl Mode. Finally, given its generous dimensions, the Tremor gets Trail Turn Assist. When activated, this system brakes the inside rear wheel to shorten the turning circle on a tight trail. The Raptor-style running boards and Electric Space Orange accents then serve to separate it from other Expeditions.
The Expedition’s new cabin is an oasis of comfort and flexibility
Leading the way is the same Ford Digital Experience first seen in the 2025 Explorer. In the Expedition, it takes the bold and makes it bigger. It starts with an oversized 24-inch display. This free-standing screen sits higher up, so the driver looks over the top of the oval steering wheel, rather than through it as before. The larger screen replaces the traditional instrumentation on the left side and allows the mapping to be displayed on the right, with widgets between.
The widescreen works in tandem with a 13.2-inch central display that runs Google’s Built-in operating system. This means it uses Google Maps as the native navigation, and it gives fast access to many of the features and functions through Google Assistant. This aspect allows the driver to set the temperature, tune the radio, find and set a destination via voice command, and the system assists with calls and texts. It also works wirelessly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Unfortunately, the native Google mapping looks to operate in ‘night mode,’ so the presentation is subdued. Ford says this was done to prevent distraction. The oddity is in the Explorer, switching to Apple CarPlay and using the phone’s version of Google Maps puts the screen in daytime mode, so it is much brighter and easier to see. I did not find the brighter screen distracting.
Beyond all the newfound finery and function, there are some thoughtful additions. Touching a button sees the top of the centre console power back to reveal a storage area large enough for a laptop or a purse. When closed and with the Expedition locked, it becomes a secure storage area. A side benefit is that when in the rearward position, it gives the second-row riders easier access to the audio and climate controls.
Optional Digital Device Holders are mounted to the back of the front seat headrests. They accommodate everything from a smartphone to an over-sized tablet. Adding the Connectivity Package then allows the rear riders to stream YouTube, Prime Video, or play their favourite video games.
More flexibility and comfort
One of the key changes is the adoption of a liftgate-tailgate combination. The top three-quarters of the so-called Split Gate lifts upwards, and replace the previous opening glass with a more substantial structure. The lower quarter of the Split Gate drops down like a tailgate. It can hold up 227 kilograms and has a fold-away seatback, making it party central.
The clever part is the inclusion of a 40-20-40-split folding third-row seat and tie-down points incorporated into the back end of the centre console that sits up front. This setup allows items up to almost three metres in length to be secured inside the Expedition with the Split Gate closed while leaving enough space for six riders!
The middle- and third-row seats are comfortable and have ample head- and legroom. Ford did not give any hard numbers, but climbing into the third row proved it is adult ready. The captain’s-seat middle row in the display model also had acres of space.
How big is the 2025 Ford Expedition?
- Long-wheelbase Max adds nine inches of length between the tires—all for cargo
The regular-length Expedition rides on a 3,112-mm wheelbase (122.5 inches); the extended-length Max stretches that to 3,340 mm (131.5 inches). Surprisingly, the extra space between the wheels is used for cargo, and not the passengers. Both the regular and long versions have 1,044 mm (41.1 inches) of legroom in the middle row; and 927 mm (36.5 inches) in the third row, which means all rows are adult-friendly.
As for cargo space, the regular-length Expedition has 612 litres (21.6 cubic feet) of cargo space with the third row up; and 1,960 L (69.2 cu. ft.) when folded flat. Dropping the middle row opens up 3,072 L (108.5 cu. ft.) of space. The Max ups those numbers to 1,022 L (36.1 cu. ft.) with third row up; and 2,135 L (75.4 cu. ft.) when folded. With all seats folded flat, there’s a massive 3,486 L (123.1 cu. ft.)!
Expanded availability of BlueCruise on Ford Expedition
- Hands-free BlueCruise cruise control comes free for one year on select models
Ford has added BlueCruise to 90% of the Expedition range. This brings a tech-laden, hands-free active cruise control that does everything it did before, but adds more features. The latest version adds a predictive speed component. This sees the hands-free cruise control slow automatically for an upcoming corner. It also has lane-change assist — use the turn signal, and it switches lanes all by itself.
BlueCruise is free for one year on select models, and then becomes a pay feature, with one-year and one-time purchase plans. If the owner decides not to activate BlueCruise at the time of purchase, it still comes with complimentary access for 90 days.
Canadian pricing for the 2025 Ford Expedition
Ford will announce the pricing and full specifications for the Expedition at the end of October, and it will start reaching dealers in the spring of 2025.
Final thoughts
The wholesale changes to the 2025 Ford Expedition do make a significant difference to the functionality and flexibility for this full-size SUV. The cabin is rich and tech-savvy, and it accommodates a large family very well — there is lots of room in all rows. Likewise, the new Split Gate feature is a smart addition that allows long items to ride along with multiple passengers, and it has serious towing numbers. Sometimes big does have its advantages.
