The Thursday Murder Club: What we know about Netflix film including cast, plot, release

The upcoming Netflix film, The Thursday Murder Club, is currently in post-production after completing filming in September. The film is based on the bestselling books by television personality Richard Osman, which follow a group of retired professionals who attempt to solve murder cases.

Osman has also penned three sequels that continue the Club’s subsequent investigations – The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed, and The Last Devil to Die.

The Thursday Murder Club boasts an experienced cast including Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie, alongside other recognised actors and emerging talents.

Amblin founder made a surprise visit to the set during production and even encountered author Richard Osman as they inspected the progress of the film.

What is the storyline of The Thursday Murder Club?

provides a brief plot summary: “The story follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun but find themselves embroiled in a real case.”

The film will be directed by Chris Columbus, known for his work on Harry Potter and Home Alone, and will be released by .

The film, adapted from Osman’s novel, is anticipated to be set in a tranquil retirement village where four elderly friends Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron tackle cold cases for entertainment.

The club springs into action when a property developer is found dead and they try and solve the mystery.

When will The Thursday Murder Club be released?

The official release date for The Thursday Murder Club has yet to be announced, but it is widely anticipated to hit screens in 2025.

Production on The Thursday Murder Club concluded in September 2024, however, a trailer for the much-anticipated film is still under wraps.

Who’s starring in The Thursday Murder Club?

The four main members of the Thursday Murder Club are played by a crew of talented actors whose names you might recognise. Helen Mirren plays ex-spy Elizabeth, Ben Kingsley is ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim, Pierce Brosnan portrays ex–union activist Ron, and Celia Imrie takes on the role of ex-nurse Joyce.

Other confirmed cast members with character roles include Star Wars’ Naomi Ackie as Donna de Freitas and The Crown’s Jonathan Pryce as Stephen Best.

Also joining the cast, albeit in unspecified roles, are Doctor Who’s David Tennant, Line of Duty’s Daniel Mays, Inbetweeners’ Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Richard E Grant from Saltburn.

The star-studded cast also features Lucifer’s Tom Ellis, His Dark Materials’ Geoff Bell, Yesterday’s Dreams’ Paul Freeman, Ted Lasso’s Sarah Niles and Doctor Who’s Ingrid Oliver.
