’ Ellie Costello and Stephen Dixon were joined by MP Sarah James who weighed in on the ongoing freebies row which has sparked fury against the government.

Ellie asked the politician about , who is for “thousands of pounds of gifts to not only the Prime Minister but to many MPs in the cabinet as well.”

Speaking on the probe, Sarah said: “He will completely cooperate with the investigation and he’s confident that he’s registered everything in the way that he should’ve done, and that’s that. We need to let that investigation run its course.”

However, the presenter then questioned: ”Why’s he got that Downing Street pass, what did he have access to Number 10?”

“He’s been a Lord for decades and he’s been very involved in trying to deliver a Labour government for a very long time, that’s why he made the donations he did … he was helping us do that,” the MP stated, adding: “He had a pass for a very short period of time, he doesn’t have one anymore.”

Ellie fired: “He handed it back though, which would suggest that he knew that was wrong. No donor should be allowed access to Downing Street.

“They certainly shouldn’t be allowed a parliamentary pass, that is the people who are working inside Number 10 and there still has never been an answer into why Lord Waheed Alli was given that pass.

“Then you hear about him being under investigation by the House of Lords about the non-registration of interest and there are questions about what power he wielded over the Labour government,” she added.

Sarah responded: “I don’t think there’s any question that he was trying to influence anything, other than to deliver a Labour government.

“He had a pass for a very short period of time, it was a temporary pass. He doesn’t have it now and that I think is the end of that.”

The MP divulged: “He’s been involved in the Labour Party for decades. I can remember in 1997 he was involved in getting a Labour government back then, when he was much younger.

“He has made significant donations to the Labour Party which we’re very grateful for, to help us get a Labour Government but that is the end of it. He is not influencing any policy at all.”

Lord Waheed Alli has donated more than £700,000 to the Labour Party, with £50,000 given this year alone.

His gifts to Prime Minister and others have included £2,000 worth of glasses, free clothes and hotel stays, including to the PM’s wife Lady Victoria.

Lord Alli, whose net worth is estimated to be around £200 million, has remained silent over the controversy.
