Slugs tend to be more active in autumn but there is a simple way to keep them out of your garden using 1 food item
Slugs can become a big nuisance in autumn as the rainy weather is ideal for these pests to thrive, but there is a simple way to stop them from munching on your plants.
Autumn tends to be the time will be more active in their as their mating season has just passed and they will be attracted to any crops waiting to be harvested.
However, Jessy Edgar, an expert from , has shared that the best way to deter these is to make a homemade spray made out of garlic.
She said: “We wanted to share our for garlic spray that slugs and snails simply hate. Garlic contains Allicin, a compound that repels slugs and snails.
“By using this garlic spray on our plants, we should therefore protect the young shoots and until-now tasty plants.

Garlic contains compound that slugs will naturally find repulsive
“Like magic, they’ve become something the slugs and snails can’t stand! Plus the spray isn’t harmful to humans, pets or other wildlife so it’s a great choice for the wildlife-conscious gardener.”
Allicin is a sulfur-based compound in garlic which will greatly irritate slugs as they will find it difficult to crawl over or be near.
Not only does garlic make slugs uncomfortable but it can interfere with a slug’s slime production, which it difficult for them to move about the garden.
Jessy said: “The one disclaimer is that the garlic spray will not work unless you apply it regularly. Think like clockwork: apply once a week, and again after heavy rains. We would recommend applying the wash in the evenings.”
Water your garden with the diluted homemade solution and slugs will stay away from your plants
How to make a slug repellant garlic spray
You will need:
- Two bulbs of garlic
- Two litres of water
Method:
Do not worry about peeling or chopping up the garlic. Simply add the garlic to a saucepan filled with water.
Boil the garlic for around 15 minutes or until it is completely soft, then squash it with a potato masher to release all the juices in the vegetables.
Sieve out the skin and other parts and until all you have is this cloudy liquid, then leave the solution to cool down and pour it into an empty spray bottle
Once you are ready to use the solution in a garden, make sure to dilute it at around two tablespoons to five litres of water in a watering can.
Your simple and natural slug-repellent is now ready to apply so you can enjoy the rest of autumn without worrying about damaged plants or wasted crops.
Jessy said: “Spray or water over your plants once a week February-October. Make sure to saturate the leaves and soil beneath
“More frequent applications will be needed in wet weather. We would recommend applying an extra round of garlic spray after heavy rain.“
