Nicholas Ralph has opened up about the return of his All Creatures Great and Small co-star Callum Woodhouse, who returns as Tristan Farnon.
The star, famed for portraying James Herriot, confessed he “missed” working side-by-side with Callum, hailing it “wonderful” to have him back in the fold.
Though fans will have to await Tristan’s much-anticipated comeback, as he is set to grace the series at a later stage.
Tristan’s absence was evidently felt both on-screen and off, as Nicholas admitted, “Tristan comes back later on in the series. What is it like having Tristan back in Skeldale and Callum back on set?
“I’ve said it time and time again that the show missed Tristan, and we missed Callum. It’s just wonderful to have him back and always a treat to work with Callum. Any scenes we have together were brilliant and a lot of fun,”.
Nicholas waxed lyrical about Tristan’s character, suggesting, “Tristan, as a character, means so much to so many people within the house, so it was a joy having him back. Seeing him interact with Carmody is a lot of fun because they are both so different. And Callum is just a great laugh- a great guy to have around both on and off set. It was a real treat.”
Rachel Shenton as Helen Herriot and Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot
The fifth series hit screens on Thursday, September 19. As Nicholas returns to the small screen once more as vet James, there’s a fresh twist for his alter ego.
Stationed away at RAF Abingdon, life moves on as his wife Helen (Rachel Shenton) takes on the lion’s share of caring for their newborn son back home, reports .
Nicholas shared his behind-the-scenes tales from the latest instalment of All Creatures Great and Small, admitting that although he’s no stranger to animal co-stars, teaming up with infants on set was “brilliant”.

Ahead of the eagerly awaited series launch, the star shared: “Yes, two little babies! They were absolutely brilliant.
“Like any other actor, they took a minute to get used to everything – after all, they were just three months old.
“But after a few days, they settled in, and it was amazing to see them smile when they started to recognise you. They were great to work with-just adorable and so smiley once they got comfortable.”
All Creatures Great and Small is back with a fifth series
In a teaser about what’s in store for his character James in the new series, Nicholas disclosed: “James thinks he’s going to come back and be Super Vet, Super Dad, and juggle both roles seamlessly. But the reality is quite different. Having a little baby and trying to be a vet at the same time, with those two worlds colliding, is much more challenging than he anticipated. That makes for a lot of fun in the episodes.”
