Steph Wood, Head of Dealer at the car financer , suggested that one of the best ways to increase the value of a used car is by protecting its paintwork.

She advised: “Whilst most car owners consider the cleanliness of their car interior, sometimes the exterior is overlooked. One of the best ways to protect your car value is to park in shaded or covered areas whenever possible.

“Sun damage from prolonged sun exposure can result in faded paint, slowly reducing value over time. If you also park somewhere that is often targeted by bird poo, this can also damage car paint, leaving pesky visible marks on the exterior.”

Despite the weather being typically duller during the autumn months, it is still important that drivers are considerate about where they park their car.

In particular, motorists should try to avoid parking underneath trees, which can put the bodywork at risk of bird mess, falling leaves and tree sap.

All of these items feature acid that can slowly deteriorate the vehicle’s clear coat, putting the paintwork at risk of colour fading and rust.

Steph also urged drivers to keep vehicle modifications to a minimum, with more extreme additions like a spoiler or large alloy wheels, affecting a car’s value.

She explained: “Some drivers enjoy the process of modifying their vehicle, however you should be clued up on how this can impact value when you come to sell your car later down the road.

“Changes such as customised paint jobs, aftermarket body kits and lowered suspension should all be avoided where possible if you’re hoping to retain as much value as possible.”
