and Verona are two of most popular cities, drawing millions of tourists every year. In 2023, Venice saw over 5.7million visitors, while Verona attracted around 5.5million, according to figures from Statista.

But just a short distance away, Vicenza offers the same beauty and charm without the crowds. This lesser-known city is just as stunning as its famous neighbours and provides a peaceful, authentic Italian experience.

Vicenza is rich in history and renowned for its architecture, especially the works of Andrea Palladio, one of greatest architects.

The city’s historic centre is filled with his masterpieces, including the iconic Basilica Palladiana and the Teatro Olimpico. While smaller than Venice and Verona, Vicenza’s streets are lined with elegant buildings, cosy cafes, and charming shops, making it an inviting place to explore.

One of the best things about Vicenza is its relaxed pace. Visitors can stroll through the city without the usual rush of tourists.

The main street, Corso Palladio, is perfect for wandering, with its mix of local boutiques and restaurants serving up classic dishes like ‘Baccala alla Vicentina’.

The city also offers a range of museums, parks, and villas, making it a great destination for a weekend getaway.

Among the highlights is the Teatro Olimpico, the world’s first indoor theatre, designed by Palladio. It’s an incredible piece of history and a must-see for anyone visiting the city.

For those looking for a peaceful escape, the Giardino Salvi offers a beautiful spot to relax, with its quiet paths and small pond.

While exact tourist numbers for Vicenza aren’t readily available, it’s clear that the city attracts far fewer visitors than Venice and Verona. However, that number seems to be increasing every year, based on reviews from tourists who visited.

Nonetheless, the lack of overwhelming crowds still makes Vicenza an ideal choice for those wanting to experience Italy’s rich culture and architecture without battling large crowds.

With easy access from Venice and Verona – just 45 minutes and 25 minutes by train, respectively – Vicenza is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
