Virgin River fans have shared their distaste for a baffling factor in season five – with one fan admitting it gave them “whiplash”.
The popular series follows nurse Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge), who moves to the small town after a tragedy and quickly falls for ex-Marine Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson).
She soon lands a job at the local clinic run by Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins (Tim Matheson) and meets his wife, the town’s mayor Hope McCrea (Annette O’Toole).
Over the course of five seasons (and two Christmas specials) so far, Mel has found herself wrapped up in plenty of local drama, emergencies and even crime as she realises life in a small town is anything but boring.
Things were taken up a gear in season five as the residents had to deal with new relationships, health scares and a forest fire – and one fan felt it was all starting to get too much.
Virgin River fans admit season five flaw gives them ‘whiplash’
“Why is everyone jumping from one relationship to another?” they asked in a recent thread.
“None of the main characters are allowed to just be single for ONE MINUTE even after a breakup.
“Haha getting whiplash from the quick jumps between people in relationships/situationships.
“And it’s supposed to be a small town! Where are all these eligible dating prospects popping up from!”
Things are moving fast for Preacher and Kaia
One of the most egregious examples is certainly Jack’s sister Brie Sheridan (Zibby Allen), for whom things are moving rather fast with Mike Valenzuela (Marco Grazzini) after ditching Dan Brady (Ben Hollingsworth).
Meanwhile, Preacher (Colin Lawrence) has been getting cosy with firefighter Kaia Bryant (Kandyse McClure), even letting slip that he loves her seemingly just a couple of weeks into their relationship.
This viewer also had Preacher in mind, continuing: “Preacher is the main one I’m thinking of, he just seems very passive, like he is fine to date any woman in his proximity for 5 minutes.
“And he’s just so unaffected when things don’t work out. I do like his character, I just have been unimpressed with the writing/plot for his relationships.
Will Virgin River fix these issues in season six?
“This also happens with Brady, Brie, and Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale), even Jack and Mel at the beginning. No one seems to resolve one relationship before falling into the next one.”
Another fan replied, pointing out the show’s ludicrously short timeline: “Especially considering that all of this happened within one year!”
Given all the twists and turns of Virgin River have happened before Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) has given birth, it’s no wonder fans are struggling to keep up with all the drama.
