Kate Winslet revealed how her youngest child, 10-year-old son Bear, reacted when he watched “Titanic” for the first time.
The Oscar-winner spoke about the moment Bear sat down to watch the blockbuster film, which was released nearly 30 years ago, during an interview with E! News.
“My youngest has seen ‘Titanic,’ he saw it last year,” she told the outlet while attending the red carpet premiere of her new movie, “Lee,” Sept. 25.
It sounds like the 10-year-old had a similar reaction to one most fans had when they watched the heartbreaking epic for the first time.
Winslet continued, “He cried a lot, and he kept having to pause it, and he was very upset.”
The actor shares Bear with her husband Edward Abel Smith. She is also a mom to 23-year-old actor Mia Threapleton, whom she shares with ex-husband Jim Threapleton, and 20-year-old son Joe Mendes from her second marriage to director Sam Mendes.
While speaking to E! News, Winslet said that her three children have “certainly not” seen every movie in which she has appeared, but they do have a standout favorite from the ones they have watched.
She shared, “My older two, who are nearly 24 and 21, they love ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.’ Yeah, that’s a big favorite for them.”
Winslet said that her older children recently watched the 2004 romantic sci-fi flick co-starring Jim Carrey.
“They’ll just sort of say, ‘Oh, I saw ‘Eternal Sunshine’ the other day,’” she said. “I’m like, ‘What? You watched it without me?”
The mom of three said she had planned on showing that particularly film to her children one day.
“I think ‘Eternal Sunshine’ was one of those films that seemed to really capture people’s minds, sort of a Zeitgeist thing that happened around that film,” she added. “And so I think I always thought I would want to watch it with my kids one day. But they beat me to it.”
Winslet has been reminiscing about the list of movies in her expansive repertoire recently, especially “Titanic,” as the film continues to be a topic of debate in pop culture.
During Vanity Fair’s “Scene Selection” segment in June, she revisited “Titanic”’s “king of the world” scene with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.
“Oh, my Lordy,” she said as the clip played. “This might be really cringe.”
She remembered her corset being tight and that they had to shoot multiple takes because DiCaprio started laughing.
As their characters locked lips in the clip, she revealed some behind-the-scenes details about why the kiss “was not all it’s cracked up to be.” She recalled having makeup, brushes and sponges hidden in her corset for quick touch-ups.
“And I would end up looking as though I had been sucking a caramel chocolate bar after each take because his makeup would come on to me,” she explained.
Although it wasn’t an easy movie to film, she still praised “Titanic.”
