Tesla Model Y 2020-2024 interior and practicality
When it comes to space, the Model Y offers plenty of comfort, especially for front-seat passengers. Regardless of height, there’s ample room to stretch out. Rear legroom and head-space also exceed what you’ll find in the Model 3, though the difference isn’t huge. For taller passengers, two six-footers will easily fit in the rear without feeling cramped, and the flat floor means a third person in the middle won’t suffer too much.
Storage-wise, the Model Y stands out, thanks to its expansive boot. The hidden compartment beneath the floor adds a surprising amount of room, and there’s also a smaller storage space behind the rear seats. The hatchback tailgate is another practical bonus, offering far more versatility than the Model 3. Larger items fit with little hassle, and the electric tailgate is convenient—it can be opened or closed via the touchscreen, the Tesla app, or the button on the boot lid.
Problems in Used 2020-2024 Tesla Model Y
Transport Canada announced a recall last month of over 36K Tesla model 3s and Ys (mostly of the 2023 year) for a glitch in the power steering system which may reduce available assist. Common owner reported problems deal with less-than-stellar fit and finishes on exterior body panels, and a few electronic glitches such as screen-freeze and GPS issues. Tire wear is another concern with some owners having to replace them more frequently than expected. Due to the vehicle’s weight and acceleration power on tap, stick with tires specifically designed for EVs which have much stronger sidewalls and harder rubber compounds.
2020-2024 Tesla Model Y reliability
The Model Y scored an average of 2.5 out of 5 on Consumer Reports reliability ranking based on driver reports. Battery life, range, and replacement costs are (or should be) top concerns for shoppers of new and pre-owned EVs. For the Tesla Model Y, current battery replacement pricing is in the $18,000-22,000 range. Tesla’s battery warranty (which applies to pre-owned models) is 8 years or 160K km for the RWD Y models and 8 years or 192K km for the AWDs. For range degradation, the warranty only kicks in when that distance falls to below 70% of capacity. Check the pre-owned Tesla Model Y in terms of where the range degradation stands before purchasing one.
2020-2024 Tesla Model Y recall history
The Tesla Model Ys recall record is abysmal. The 2020 model was recalled 22 times for various issues such as faulty seat belt alert, faulty latches, separating suspension parts and numerous recalls for the electrical system. The 2021 model had 21 recalls, mostly for the same set of issues. Electrical system faults including autosteer not engaging, FSD software (beta versions) exceeding speed limits were some of the 18 recalls in the 2022 models. The 2023 model year units were recalled 15 times including one for faulty TPMS and unavailability of forward collision avoidance due to a misaligned front camera. The 2024 models have been recalled five times.
Which used Tesla Model Y should you buy?
For Canadian roads, the AWD version is the way to go. Avoid the higher costs of the Performance models as the lesser versions will deliver more than enough punch for most drivers. Opting for a regular or long-range model, depends on your planned use and proximity to charging stations. Most EV owners have their own chargers installed in their home garage.
