Mirra Andreeva has been dubbed “lucky” by one former tennis ace following her stunning victory over world No.1 at Indian Wells. The teenager, who burst onto the scene last year, .

It’s a result that emphasises Andreeva’s title as the best young talent on the WTA Tour, with talk she could compete for a Slam later this year starting to pick up. Indian Wells is already the second title she’s won in 2025, having tasted victory at the Dubai Tennis Championships last month.

The Indian Wells win was also a monkey off the back of Andreeva’s coach, Conchita Martinez. She twice reached the final of the competition as a player and both times lost to the current world No.1 at the time. It proved third time lucky for Martinez, who as a coach was able to this time be on the winning side – against the world No.1 too!

Reacting to the victory, Boris Becker, labelled Andreeva “lucky” to have the Spanish coach in her corner. Writing on X, he said: “So much respect for Conchita! She is one of the very best coaches tennis [tennis ball emoji] has ever seen! Mirra is lucky girl to have her in her corner! Now go and win more tournaments together… We can’t wait!”

Next on the agenda for Andreeva is the Miami Open, which gets underway this week, as the Russian goes in search of the coveted ‘Sunshine Double’. Speaking during Sunday’s trophy presentation, she said: “After the first set, she killed me once again and I didn’t know to do. I was a bit negative with myself because I had a lot of opportunities and didn’t convert them.

“After I went on a toilet break I tried to think and calm myself down, I looked in the mirror and said a lot of positive things, even though it wasn’t easy, and just like that I tried to bring myself back and in the end it worked.

“I would say I’m a little surprised that I did it [WTA 1000 titles] so soon, but I feel confident in my game and know what I’m going to do and what to expect from myself as soon as I go on court.”

Andreeva enters the Miami Open as the 11th seed and as such has been given a bye into the second round. She will face either Veronika Kudermetova or Wang Xinyu.
