An ecstatic Newcastle United supporter’s “best day of her life” culmination with a surprise marriage proposal. The lucky lady named Maddie joined thousands of fellow Geordies descending on St James Park on Sunday evening after the black and white underdogs stunned red-hot favourites Liverpool to lift the EFL Carabao Cup. The trophy marked the end of 70 years without any domestic silverware for Newcastle and sparked wild scenes of celebration in the north east city.

But just when Maddie thought her day could not get any better her bearded-boyfriend dropped down on one knee to pop the question. Video of the magical moment on social media showed Maddie exclaiming “shut up” as her boyfriend shouted out her name and prompted her to turn and look and see him getting into the traditional bended proposal position.

She then says: “Are you serious?” as the ring is presented and the all important question “Will you marry me?” is asked.

Maddied burst out laughing before taking the ring and putting it on her finger – albeit the wrong hand.

She wrote: “Not only did Newcastle win a trophy but I got engaged!!!. Best day of my lifeeeee.”

The video quickly amassed over 50,000 views on as football fans across the whole country offered their congratulations.

Maddie’s “best day of her life” claim was matched by famous Newcastle fans including singer Sam Fender and TV presenter Declan Donnelly.

Fender, who is on tour and could not be at Wembley, had taken to Stories before the game, posting: “Already got emotional today. Shed some tears. HWTL (Howay the lads)”.

He later shared a picture of himself wearing a Newcastle shirt and scarf.

After the game, he posted again, writing: “Best day ever. We deserved it. 70 years.

“The clock has been reset. Howay the lads.”

Ant McPartlin and Donnelly meanwhile were at Wembley to take in the historic result.

In a euphoric Stories post featuring the duo, Donnelly said: “Well, we did it!”

McPartlin added: “Toon toon, I’ve lost me voice”.

Donnelly said: “I cannot believe it, this is the best day of my life … apart from the wedding and the kids and all that, but apart from that it’s the best day of my life!”

Newcastle legend and Match Of The Day presenter Alan Shearer was also at Wembley, and posted on social media to share his delight.

“Toon Toon (heart emojis) arrrmyyyyyyyyy. Ah man. Did the Geordies deserve that or what,” he wrote.

Meanwhile Newcastle city centre ground to a halt as the Toon Army celebrated the end of the club’s trophy drought.

Many fans were not alive the last time the club won a domestic trophy 70 years ago and it is 56 years since they won in Europe – the Inter-City Fairs Cup in 1969.

After watching along with several thousands other supporters at a fanzone in Newcastle, Brian Ramshaw, 65, said: “We have always been the bridesmaid, never the bride … but not today, not today.”

He pointed to his black and white scarf featuring the late manager Sir Bobby Robson and said: “Bring it home for Bobby.”

Kelly Wood, 39, from North Shields, North Tyneside, was wearing a plastic poncho and said she had been swilled with beer when the goals went in.

Her friend Kelly Wood, 28, joked: “Tomorrow should be a bank holiday, we deserve it.”

Liverpool, who have won 38 trophies since Newcastle’s last, were strong favourites to win the cup and are riding high in the Premier League.

But the Magpies outplayed them and left their success-starved fans ready to party.
